Austin Film Festival retrospective screening of 'Shotgun Stories' with a post-film Q&A with director Jeff Nichols.
Jeff Nichols is coming back to Austin on Monday, August 31, for a retrospective screening of Shotgun Stories at Galaxy Highland 10, hosted by the Austin Film Festival. The night is built around the film itself, followed by a Q&A with Nichols, so you'll get to see the movie and then hear from the man who made it.
Shotgun Stories was Nichols' first feature, a story about two sets of warring brothers set in his native Arkansas. It stars Michael Shannon in one of his most striking early roles, and the film won the Austin Film Festival's Narrative Feature Jury Award back in 2007. This screening is a retrospective, and since the festival is the one hosting it, it's a bit of a homecoming for the movie that helped put Nichols on the map here.
Nichols has spent the years since Shotgun Stories building a reputation for character-driven dramas, and he summed up his whole approach in a recent Variety interview: "I guess I'm always making relationship dramas." That's a good way to frame this one, too—it's as much about the friction between the brothers as it is about the conflict between the families.

The screening is at Galaxy Highland 10, located at 6700 Middle Fiskville in Midtown. The theater was a Best of Austin 2003 Critics Pick for Best-Kept-Secret Movie Theatre, and it's listed as showing no alcohol. The whole thing—the film and the Q&A—happens on Monday, August 31.
