Live country music night featuring Aaron McDonnell, Mayeux & Broussard, and The Ransom Brothers at The White Horse, with two-step lessons before the bands.
Aaron McDonnell, Mayeux & Broussard, and The Ransom Brothers are all on the bill at The White Horse on Saturday, August 8. It's a long night that starts early and runs late, with the music taking over the room from the afternoon through the early hours of Sunday morning.
If you've spent any time on Comal, you know the drill. The night opens with two-step lessons, so you can get your footing before the bands take over. From there, the lineup moves through Mayeux & Broussard and The Ransom Brothers, and then Aaron McDonnell, a Spicewood, Texas native, closes it out with a second set after the others have finished. It's a full run of music that keeps going well past the point where most shows would have called it a night.
The White Horse has been a fixture on Comal since December 2011, when co-owners Nathan Hill and Denis O'Donnell carried on the honky-tonk tradition. They drew on the residencies they curated during their days managing the Hole in the Wall, and the venue went on to help launch modern outlaw country acts like Mike & the Moonpies and Leo Rondeau. Sundays have long belonged to the Eastside institution Conjunto Los Pinkys, and the room's low-set stage and packed, multi-generational dancing crowd keep it a lively part of Austin's age-old ethos. This Saturday fits right into that—the lessons start early, the bands follow, and McDonnell brings it home.
