A night with comedian Vanessa Gonzalez, screening her special Mamona with a live Q&A.
Vanessa Gonzalez is coming to Hyperreal Film Club on Sunday, September 27, for a screening of her first hour special, Mamona, followed by a live Q&A. If you've followed her around the Austin scene for a while, you know she's a local stapleβa three-time Best of Austin award winner who's spent years working the city's rooms. Mamona is her first full hour, recorded last December at the Creek and the Cave and released on Hulu on September 15 to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.
The special pulls from the things that have always shaped her: growing up in a Texas border town raised by a devout Catholic mother and a witch grandmother, and the weight of what it means to be called mamona. Through sharp observational humor and personal storytelling, she walks the audience through her family's chaos, the cultural expectations she grew up with, and the courage it takes to stop pleasing everyone else and start chasing her own dreams. It's the kind of set that feels specific to her life but hits on things a lot of us recognize.
She also doesn't shy away from the world outside her living room. In a conversation with the Austin Chronicle, she talked about how hard it is not to bring politics into the work when they affect you so directly. "Being a woman and Mexican American in Texas, it's like my whole life is political now," she said.

The night is hosted by Hyperreal Film Club, an Austin project that focuses on unique movie-watching experiences in immersive pop-up environments and amplifying local artists. The screening runs from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM at 301 Chicon Street, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. The Q&A follows the special, so you'll get to hear from her in person after the credits roll.
