It's a deep dive into a printmaking process that uses light-sensitive plates to turn imagery into richly detailed prints, and the whole thing is aimed at getting you comfortable with the fundamentals.
If you're not familiar with the process, photoplate lithography works by using photopolymer plates that react to light. You expose an image onto the plate, and the parts that get hit by light harden, while the rest washes away. That leaves you with a plate that holds ink in the exact shapes you want. Over the four weeks, Orsburn walks you through how to work with those plates, combining photographic processes with the expressive, painterly qualities of traditional lithography. It's a way to bridge the gap between a photo and a hand-printed piece.
The class is held at Feats of Clay Pottery, a woman-owned and operated ceramics studio that's been running since 1976. It's a long-standing Austin spot that serves as a home for both professional artists and hobbyists, and it's community-driven and fun-loving. Beyond the classes, they run workshops and private lessons, and they have The Gallery on-site, which is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM.
