2026 Oita Japan Summer Festival

The 2026 Oita Japan Summer Festival is coming to the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, August 30, from 11 AM to 5 PM. It's an annual celebration of Japanese culture and the sister city relationship between Austin and Oita, Japan, hosted by the Austin-Oita Sister City Committee. The whole day is family-friendly, and it brings the sights, sounds and flavors of Japan right here to the city.

There's a lot to walk through over those six hours. You'll find authentic Japanese food and drink, and live performances that run from music and dance to martial arts. Cultural demonstrations like tea ceremony and calligraphy let you see these traditions up close rather than just reading about them, and there's a curated marketplace with unique goods to browse. There are also interactive activities for visitors of all ages, so it works as a full-day outing with kids as much as a casual stop for a few hours.

The festival is put on by the Austin-Oita Sister City Committee, the group that maintains the connection between Austin and its sister city in Japan. That relationship is the reason the event happens every year, and the programming reflects it—bringing over a slice of Oita's culture for a day in Austin.
