Behind-the-scenes encounter with warthogs on the African Savanna, where guests meet the Animal Care Team and give the warthogs a treat.
Zoo Atlanta is running its Warthog Wild Encounter on Sunday, October 25, as part of a season that runs from April 3 through November 16. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the warthogs on the zoo's African Savanna, and if you've only ever seen them from the path, this is the version you'll actually remember.
You start by meeting members of the zoo's Animal Care Team, who walk you through what it takes to look after the warthogs and their savanna neighbors. They'll explain the positive reinforcement training and enrichment programs they use to keep the animals engaged, and then you get to give the warthogs one of their favorite treats. Everyone walks away with a keepsake to take home. The zoo itself sits in historic Grant Park and was founded in 1889, making it one of the ten oldest zoos in continuous operation in the United States.
There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you book. The encounter isn't ADA accessible, and you have to wear closed-toed shoes. There's also a strict animal safety rule: anyone who's been outside the United States or Canada in the ten days before the program can't take part. Children have to be four or older, and guests under 15 need to be accompanied by a ticketed adult.

The encounter runs from 10:00 to 10:35 AM, and you'll meet outside the warthog habitat near the SweetWater Beer Garden. Tickets are $45 on top of zoo admission, with a slightly lower $41 rate for those four and up.
