Weekly Friday night screening of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' with a live shadow cast by Lips Down on Dixie at the historic Plaza Theatre.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show runs nearly every Friday night at 11 PM at The Plaza Theatre, and it's not just the movie playing on the screen. This is a shadow cast screening, which means amateur actors in costume pantomime the film's scenes right in front of the screen and out in the aisles. The local group Lips Down on Dixie (LDoD) has been performing it under the screen at the Plaza almost every Friday night since 2000. LDoD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded to stage screen-accurate productions of the film as an alternative entertainment source for metro Atlanta.
The venue is part of the city's cinematic history. The Plaza Theatre, in Briarcliff Plaza, opened in 1939 as Atlanta's longest-running independent cinema. It was designed in Art Deco by architect George Harwell Bond and opened with George Cukor's The Women. The main house still has its original 20-foot screen surrounded by golden curtains and its iconic marquee with a blue wave at the crest. By 1983, after George LeFont bought the theatre, it became the city's hub for arthouse and international films. In 2017, under Christopher Escobar, it added two small auditoriums and 4K/35-70mm projection. The Plaza Theatre Foundation, founded in 2009, works to restore and preserve the historic cinema.
