Thanksgiving concert by the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer's choirs and instrumentalists, with works by Billings, Thompson, Ives and others.
The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer is bringing back its annual Thanksgiving concert on Friday, November 13. It's called The Harvest Home Concert: A Midtown Thanksgiving, and the church's own choirs and instrumentalists are the ones performing. The whole thing is built around the American values of harvest, family, feast, and home, sung from a modern midtown Atlanta perspective.
This year's program is titled Our American Journeys, and it pulls from a wide range of American composers. You'll hear William Billings, Randall Thompson, and Charles Ives alongside Stephen Paulus, Gwyneth Walker, Andre Thomas, and Joel Thompson. It's a mix of early American choral music and more contemporary voices, all performed by the church's choirs and instrumentalists rather than a visiting group.
There's an extra layer to this particular edition: it marks the country's 250th birthday. The theme of American journeys fits right into that, and the program follows the same thread, moving from the early works of Billings through to the more recent pieces by Thomas and Thompson.
