Free-will early music concert of 16th to early 18th century Lutheran composers by the vocal ensemble Echoing Air and Baroque instruments.
Echoing Air brings A Mighty Fortress to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on Friday, October 30, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. They're an Indianapolis-based vocal ensemble performing with Baroque instruments, and the program focuses on Lutheran composers from the 16th to the early 18th century.
The set is built around two ideas: the Lutheran ideal of forging a personal connection with God and the growing prominence of the German vernacular in sacred music. It's a wide stretch of time and territory, pulling from Heinrich Schütz, Johann Schein, Dieterich Buxtehude, Vincent Lübeck, Johann Rosenmüller, Johann Fischer, and Dietrich Becker. Hearing those names in one sitting gives you a sense of how the sound evolved across those centuries, from the early Reformation years into the high Baroque.
The concert is part of the Redeemer Concert Series, a long-running tradition of inspirational music in Midtown Atlanta held in the church's Sanctuary and Sims Atrium. The series also includes the annual Harvest Home Concert, the church's musical celebration of Thanksgiving, and the annual Organ Anniversary Concert, which celebrates the church's 73-rank Létourneau pipe organ.
