Free screening of Spike Lee's Girl 6 on 35mm, introduced by Dr. Stephane Dunn with a post-screening Q&A, part of the '40 Years of Brother Spike Lee' retrospective.
The Emory Cinematheque is screening Girl 6 on Wednesday, October 21, at White Hall, Room 208, on Emory's Atlanta campus. The film is part of 40 Years of Brother Spike Lee, a retrospective of Lee's work curated by Emory professor Beretta E. Smith-Shomade that runs from September 2 through December 9. The Cinematheque is run by Emory's Department of Film and Media; they screen professional prints on Wednesday nights and open them to the public for free, with each film introduced by an Emory professor or a special guest.
Girl 6 (1996) is Lee's eighth commercial film and the third to center a woman as its protagonist. It adapts a play by Suzan-Lori Parks and parodies Hollywood through the phone sex business, following one Black woman's dreams against the reality of the industry. Theresa Randle stars alongside Isaiah Washington, Jenifer Lewis, and Debi Mezar, with cameos from Quentin Tarantino, Halle Berry, Naomi Campbell, and Madonna. The soundtrack was written and produced by Prince, and cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed—who also shot Lee's Clockers—gives the film its look. The screening runs 108 minutes, from a 35mm print provided by the Yale Film Archive.
