An all-night horror film marathon curated by Justin LaLiberty as part of the BAFF series, featuring four decades of horror cinema with two 35mm screenings.
Plaza & Tara are taking over the Plaza Theatre on Saturday, October 17, for Spooktacular Part III, an all-night horror marathon that kicks off at 8 PM and runs until about 5 or 6 in the morning. It's part of BAFF, the Atlanta Biennial of Fantastic and Frightening, a film series the Plaza has been running. Programmer Justin LaLiberty curated this one, and it pulls from four decades of horror cinema from around the world. Two of the films will be presented on 35mm, and the titles are kept secret until they hit the screen, so you're going in blind.
The venue itself is an Atlanta arthouse icon with an 83-year history. Owner Christopher Escobar recently signed a new 25-year lease and is in the middle of a $4 million restoration and revitalization—the largest investment in the theater's history—which will add an elevator, a rooftop patio, and an expanded concession stand. The cinema ended its drive-in screenings but kept the innovations it picked up during the pandemic, and Francis Ford Coppola and his son Roman once stopped by during a showing of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The Plaza and the nearby Fox Theatre have also teamed up to champion emerging filmmakers and preserve historic theater screenings.

Since you'll be there through the night, there are a few practical things to keep in mind. The Righteous Room kitchen stays open until 12:30 AM, and alcohol sales stop at 2 AM. Free coffee is served throughout the night courtesy of Kadli Coffee, which should help when the sun starts coming up. The marathon starts at 8 PM on Saturday, October 17, and wraps up around 5 or 6 AM Sunday morning.
