Solo performance by Arkansas roots singer Nick Shoulders, blending country croon, Appalachian yodel and field holler from his album 'Refugia Blues'.
Nick Shoulders plays Center Stage - The Vinyl on Friday, October 23, from 8 PM to 11 PM. He's performing Refugia Blues, his fifth album, which he's built around the acoustic traditions of Southern music. For this one, the Arkansas native turns off his amp and steps up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer, singing in a voice that blends country croon, Appalachian yodel, and high-lonesome field holler.
The record is described as one of big ideas and small, intimate moments, and Shoulders' take on American roots music sits closer to something progressive and punky than to modern-day country. The songs cover climate collapse, radical anthropology, and generative disruption, so the set is as much about those subjects as it is about the sound. It's a solo show, with Shoulders handling the singing and the playing himself.
