Academic seminar on the molecular basis of disease presented by Natalia Juliana Bayona Vasquez, PhD, from Emory University, within the Molecular Basis of Disease program at Georgia State University.
Natalia Juliana Bayona Vasquez, PhD, is coming to Georgia State University on Friday, October 23, for a seminar on the molecular basis of disease. She's joining us from Emory University, so it's a local cross-town visit rather than a long-haul trip. The talk runs from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM in PSC 124, inside the Science & Tech building.
If you're not familiar with the group hosting, the seminar is put on by the Molecular Basis of Disease program, or MBD. It's a computational biomedicine program here at GSU, built as an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental experience that trains pre-doctoral candidates, undergraduates, and high school juniors and seniors in the molecular sciences. It's not tucked away in one corner of the university; it spans six GSU departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Neuroscience, and Physics and Astronomy. That mix is exactly what the program is about—bringing together researchers from different fields to investigate the molecular mechanisms of disease, with the goal of advancing biomedical discovery and collaborative science.
There's a strong research engine behind it, too. MBD offers paid research fellowships, including a PhD Fellowship and a Summer Undergrad Research Fellowship, and the university notes that the program has seen four consecutive years in which research awards have exceeded $100 million. It's a high-activity environment for anyone working at the intersection of computation and biology.

Bayona Vasquez will be presenting her work on the molecular basis of disease, and since the seminar is open to the GSU community, it's a good chance to hear from a researcher working in the field. It's a one-hour session on Friday, October 23, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM in PSC 124, 124 Science & Tech, Georgia State University.
