Hands-on workshop in which participants design and build their own small handmade altar using paper, collage, flowers and found objects.
Museum of Design Atlanta is hosting Make@MODA: Handmade Altars on Tuesday, October 27, from 2 PM to 4 PM. It's a hands-on workshop where you spend the afternoon designing and building your own small altar from scratch, working with paper, collage materials, flowers, found objects and decorative elements. You'll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects whatever you choose to celebrate, remember, honor or imagine.
The session takes its cue from the idea that altars have been part of art and design across cultures for centuries—used to honor others, preserve memories, express beliefs and tell stories. The making process itself leans on color, symbolism, composition and layering to communicate an idea, so it's as much about the thinking as it is about the doing. It's aimed at anyone interested in handmade work, personal storytelling, seasonal making or creative experimentation.
If you're not sure where to start, that's the point of a workshop like this: you bring the intention, and the materials do the rest. Whether you're thinking of someone in particular, a specific memory, or just want to play around with collage and found objects, you'll have a few hours to work it through. By the time you're done, you'll have a physical object to take home that belongs entirely to you.
