Instrumental funk groove trio LaMP performs live at Center Stage in Atlanta.
LaMP play Vinyl on Sunday, October 18, an instrumental funk groove trio that works without a singer. The lineup is Russ Lawton on drums, Ray Paczkowski on Hammond B3, Clavinet, and Rhodes, and Scott Metzger on guitar. They're an interstate group of improvisers, and they describe their sound as emerging fully formed at their very first show.
That sound draws on the jazz and soul organ traditions of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. Their second studio album, ONE OF US (2025), distills years of road-honed improv instincts into taut, instrumental epics of kaleidoscopic interplay and shifting grooves. It's the kind of record that makes sense to hear live, where the improvising they talk about actually happens in the room.
There's some deep-cut history behind the three. Lawton and Paczkowski have both toured with the Trey Anastasio Band and played in Soule Monde, and Metzger has been in projects like Joe Russo's Almost Dead. The band itself was born at Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont, where they recorded Live At Nectar's from two nights at the venue; One Of Us was cut over three days at Ben Collette's Tank Recording Studio in that same city.
