Hands-on day with the Zoo Atlanta Herpetology Care Team where participants over 16 help care for reptiles and amphibians.
Zoo Atlanta is opening up its herpetology department for a Keeper for a Day: Reptiles and Amphibians session on Wednesday, October 21. It's a half-day program that runs from 8 AM to 12:30 PM, and it's open to anyone over 16. If you've ever wondered what actually goes into taking care of the zoo's cold-blooded residents, this is your chance to see it from the inside.
The day is run by the zoo's Herpetology Care Team, who'll take you behind the scenes at Scaly Slimy Spectacular. You'll meet the people who work there every day and get a look at the science and the level of care these animals need. Along the way, you'll encounter an animal and learn about the zoo's positive reinforcement training and enrichment programs—and it's worth noting that all animal participation is voluntary.
Be clear on one thing, though: this isn't just a tour. You'll be doing work similar to what the care team does, which means raking, sweeping, hosing, scrubbing, and shoveling. It's physically demanding, and you'll be expected to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for up to four hours. You'll need to be comfortable getting dirty and working in all kinds of weather, so come prepared for a morning on your feet.
