Live show by the New York experimental dance-punk band Guerilla Toss at The EARL.
Guerilla Toss play The EARL on Monday, October 26, starting at 8 PM. They're a New York City experimental dance-punk band that got its start in the Boston DIY scene back in 2012, and they've been calling New York home ever since.
Their 2022 Sub Pop debut, Famously Alive, drew comparisons to Sonic Youth, Public Image Ltd and Brian Eno, and they've toured with acts like Pavement. The current lineup — Zachary Lewellyn, Arian Shafiee, Kassie Carlson, Jake Lichter and Peter Negroponte — is described by fans as explosive, energetic and joyful, with a strong danceability to it. That danceability is a good way to frame them: it's experimental music that still wants you to move.
They're touring their fifth album and second for Sub Pop, You're Weird Now, which they describe as a joyful, genreless statement about the joy of creativity. Frontwoman Kassie Carlson calls it the band's "Greatest Hits that didn't exist until now."

The record was tracked in Vermont, where Carlson staged a "punk lunch" communal meal raided from the studio fridge. Joining in were Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and The Jicks, who produced the album, and Phish's Trey Anastasio. The track "Red Flag to Angry Bull" closes with a Malkmus/Carlson duet over an Anastasio solo, so that session shows up pretty clearly on the record. The show is at The EARL, 488 Flat Shoals Ave SE, and tickets are $20 in advance and $20 at the door.
