Theatrical and musical piece by Réunion Island company Tilawcis that weaves the cultures of New Orleans, Réunion Island and Puerto Rico, presented by Alliance Française Atlanta.
La Compagnie Tilawçis brings Flamboyants! to 7 Stages Theatre on Thursday, October 22, presented by Alliance Française Atlanta. It's a theatrical and musical creation that weaves together the cultures of New Orleans, Réunion Island and Puerto Rico, performed in five languages: Louisiana Creole, Réunion Creole, English, French and Spanish.
The piece draws on the traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians and grew out of an unusual artistic collaboration with New Orleans Big Chief Jwan Boudreaux, who provided music and creation. On stage, that translates into a mix of live music, theatre, dance, storytelling and documentary elements. The story is set on Réunion Island, where a man curses his name before throwing himself into the Indian Ocean, prompting Creole peoples from across the world to unite and teach him his true history.
Because it's performed in five languages, the show brings together voices from different sides of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans—Louisiana Creole, Réunion Creole, English, French and Spanish—all within a single production. The music and the Mardi Gras Indian influence tie those threads together, and the documentary elements ground the whole thing in real history. It's a production that asks a lot of its audience to keep up with different languages and traditions at once, but that's exactly what it's about: people from across the globe coming together to tell a story.
