Silent film screening of the 1920 classic 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' with live organ accompaniment by Ken Double on the Fox Theatre's Mighty Mo organ.
The Fox Theatre is bringing a silent film classic back to the big screen on Tuesday, October 20, as part of its Coca-Cola Film Series. The feature is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), starring John Barrymore, and it's getting a live score on the house organ.
If you're not familiar with the 1920 version, it's a silent horror take on the Robert Louis Stevenson story, and Barrymore is the one playing both roles. The live accompaniment comes from organist Ken Double, who'll be playing the Fox's Mighty Mo. That organ is a Möller pipe organ custom-built for the theatre in 1929, a four-manual, 42-rank instrument that's cited as one of the largest and most renowned theatre organs in the country. Hearing a silent film scored live on an instrument that size is a different experience than watching it with a recorded track.
It's part of the Coca-Cola Film Series, which the Fox has been running as a way to bring old films back to the screen with live music. This one puts a 1920 horror classic in a room built for this kind of thing, with the organ providing the sound for the whole run.
