Celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead with traditional food, ofrendas, candy skulls and paper marigolds at Georgia State University.
Día de los Muertos comes to the Student Center East State Ballroom (Senate Salon) on Monday, November 2, from 12 PM to 4 PM. It's a celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead, a tradition that honors loved ones who have passed, and this one brings that custom to Georgia State University's Atlanta campus.
Inside the Senate Salon, you'll find the things that make the holiday what it is: traditional food, ofrendas—the altars built to remember the dead—candy skulls, and paper marigolds. If you've never seen an ofrenda up close, it's a good place to start; they're usually decorated with photos, favorite foods, and flowers to welcome spirits back for a visit. The food and the candy skulls are part of that same tradition, and the marigolds are the bright orange blooms that usually line the way.
The event is put on by the university's Cultures, Communities & Inclusion (CCI) department. It's held at the Student Center, the hub of student activity on campus, which houses resources for growth, academic success, and involvement. The center employs more than 100 students through the College to Career program, and its mission is to nurture an inclusive and diverse community through its services, programs, and facilities.
