The Tony and Grammy Award-winning Broadway musical about the music and memory of Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, part of Broadway in Atlanta.
Buena Vista Social Club is playing The Fox Theatre in Atlanta from October 30 through November 1, as part of Broadway in Atlanta and presented by Regions Bank. It's the stage adaptation of the album that brought Cuban son to the world, and it's coming to us after a run on Broadway.
The story centers on Omara Portuondo, the singer known as the 'Queen of Feeling,' whose voice was celebrated across Cuba until she vanished from the spotlight. The plot kicks in when a young record producer brings her a rare opportunity to reckon with her past. Most of the action takes place in a music studio in Old Havana, on San Miguel between Lealtad and Campanario, and the show draws on the real-life recordings and the legacy of the band that made the sound famous. The Washington Post called it a 'jaw-dropping, soul-stirring must see.'
On stage, Karmine Alers plays Omara Portuondo, Mauro Castillo takes on Ibrahim Ferrer, and Isabel Gonzales plays Young Omara. The production comes with some heavy credentials: it's a Tony and Grammy Award-winning show that was nominated for ten Tonys last year and walked away with four competitive ones, plus a special Tony for its live band. That live band is a big part of what it isβthe music isn't just in the background; it's the thing the whole show is built around.
