Guided forest walk with a Birds Georgia volunteer to discover the feathered inhabitants of Fernbank Forest.
Birds Georgia is leading a guided forest walk at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History on Saturday, October 24, starting at 8 AM. It's a morning spent in the woods with a Birds Georgia volunteer, who'll help you spot the birds that make their home in the museum's forest.
That forest is Fernbank Forest, a 65-acre mature mixed forest on the museum grounds. It's home to trees that are relatively old compared to much of the Piedmont, so it's a bit of a different canopy than you'll find in most of the city. The walk is about finding the feathered inhabitants that live there, and having a volunteer along makes it a lot easier to actually identify what you're seeing rather than just guessing at a flash of color in the branches.
If you've never been, the museum itself is a good place to spend the rest of the day. Inside, it houses live animals, ancient fossils, prehistoric cultures, and new science discoveries, with new exhibits, movies, and experiences added throughout the year. You can start your morning in the woods and then head inside to see the fossils and live animals.
