York Witch Walk: Free Special Walk

Ragnell Hagathorn is leading a free theatrical walking tour through York on Saturday 8 August, starting at St Helen's Square. It's a 90-minute trip through the city's darkest tales — witches, ghosts and apparitions — and it's one of those nights that works best when you're actually out in the streets rather than reading about them in a book.

If you haven't come across her before, Hagathorn is a character in her own right. She goes by a few names — Ye Wise Olde Witch, Hedge Witch, Druidess — and her backstory is as much a part of the experience as the stories she tells. She claims to have lived in secret in York since the Burning Times, having arrived in this world three thousand years ago from the Otherworld. Whether you take that as part of the act or something more, it sets the tone for the kind of storytelling she does.

There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you book. This is an outdoor walk over cobbles and uneven pavements, so comfortable shoes are a must. It goes ahead even if it rains, so bring a jacket. Also, the whole thing is being professionally filmed, and by booking your place you're agreeing to appear in the footage. It's strictly for adults — over 18s only, not suitable for children — and it's aimed at a mature audience, so keep that in mind if you're thinking of bringing anyone along.

It's a free event, but places are strictly limited and you have to book in advance at witchwalk.co.uk. The walk runs from 20:30 to 22:00, with registration starting at 20:20, so you'll want to be at St Helen's Square (YO1 8QP) a bit early to get sorted before the tour sets off.
