A guided behind-the-scenes tour of the historic York Theatre Royal, including a voucher for a drink and a selection of cakes or pastries.
York Theatre Royal is opening its doors for a Theatre Tour & Tea on Friday 10 July and Saturday 11 July, a guided look behind the scenes of one of the city's oldest stages. If you've spent your life watching shows from the stalls, this is the chance to see how the building actually works from the inside.
The tour takes you through the theatre to hear about its history, and you'll get into the areas that aren't usually open to the public. It's a guided walk, so you're not just left to wander; you'll be shown around by someone who knows the place, and there's plenty of room to ask questions as you go. If you've ever wondered what's happening behind the curtain or how the building has changed over the years, this is the time to get those answers.
Once the tour is over, the tea part kicks in. You'll get a voucher for a drink of your choice and a treat from the cake counter — you can pick between a cake, a brownie, a scone, or a pastry. It's a nice way to sit and let the stories from the tour sink in, rather than just being ushered out the door the moment the walk ends.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in York and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

There are two slots to choose from: Friday 10 July at 14:00, or Saturday 11 July at 10:30, so you can fit it into a weekday afternoon or a Saturday morning. It's £20 per person, and that covers both the tour and the tea.
