York has a long-standing reputation as one of the UK's most haunted cities, with ghostly sightings and dark history filling its historic streets, and this trail leans right into that.
It's not the only thing going on around town this Halloween. The York Dungeon has built an experience set in the shadowy world of the prophetess Mother Shipton, and Barley Hall is inviting trainee ghost hunters to track spirits from more than 2,000 years of the city's history. Over at the National Railway Museum, tiny, hand-crafted ghosts are hidden throughout Station Hall, made in collaboration with York Ghost Merchants. When dark falls, a variety of ghost walks take in the city's haunted streets, and the Shambles Food Court, right alongside the market, serves up street food and ghostly gifts.
