Neil Hanson is coming to Middlethorpe Hall & Spa on Monday 2 November for a lunchtime talk about his life as a ghostwriter. It's a long morning that stretches into the afternoon: tea and coffee from 10:30am in the Drawing Room, the talk itself from 11:00am in the Barlow Room, and a three-course lunch from 12:30pm. The whole thing runs until 3:00pm, so you'll want to clear your Monday morning.
If you've never heard of him, the numbers do the heavy lifting here. Hanson has written 70 published books, including Inn & Out at the Top, Champagne Breakfast and Flying Pigs, A Dickens of a Christmas and The Myths of Time. But the real story is who he's written for. He's ghostwritten for an American showbiz legend, England's most legendary cricketer, one of Britain's most decorated soldiers, an England football manager and the man who turned his family's bakery into Britain's biggest fast-food chain. That's just the start — he's also worked with SAS men, fast-jet pilots, explorers, a treasure diver, a kidnap negotiator, a notorious gangster, a leading surgeon and a spy.
The talk is called The Ghostwriter, and it's designed to lift the veil on the hidden worlds of those clients. He'll be talking about the truth behind one of the most earthshattering events of our times, and the general reality of writing other people's lives for them. After the talk, there's a three-course lunch with wine, coffee or tea, and Middlethorpe fudge to finish. It's a full day out rather than just a quick drop-in.
