A hands-on experience bringing iconic retro games to life with seven larger-than-life installations, including a laser run and giant Tetris wall, alongside community safety visits.
The Actual Reality Arcade returns to Parliament Street on Saturday 15 August, bringing retro gaming out of the screen and into the city centre. It's a hands-on experience that takes iconic arcade classics and scales them up to human size, so instead of tapping a button, you're moving through the games yourself.
There are seven larger-than-life installations to work your way through. A huge-scale laser run lets you dodge beams like you're in a heist movie, and a giant Tetris wall turns the puzzle into something you can actually climb or manipulate. The most chaotic one is whack-a-mole, but with human volunteers popping up instead of plastic moles. It's the kind of thing that works as well for a family afternoon as it does for a few friends who spent too many hours in an arcade when they were younger.
Beyond the games, there's a community side to the day. You can meet the teams who keep York safe every day, get a proper look at emergency and service vehicles, and hear how local organisations support the city. It's a good chance to put faces to the services you usually only see from a distance.
