SpeedQuizzing is coming to The Black Bull in York on Sunday 30 August, with Steve Quizzing running the show. If you've never come across it, it's not your usual pen-and-paper pub quiz. Instead of scribbling answers on a sheet and handing them in at the end, you'll be using a smartphone to enter your answers in real time. The speed part is exactly what it sounds like: the quicker you get the answer in, the more points you score, so it's as much about how fast you can think as what you actually know.
That's the main draw of the format. It takes the usual quiz setup and turns it into something a bit more active, where a split-second difference can be the thing that puts you ahead of the next table. It's a good one for a Sunday afternoon or evening when you're out with a group and fancy something a bit more competitive than a standard trivia night. Because it's run through your phone, there's no faffing about with pens or worrying if you've missed a question — you just focus on the screen and the clock.
Steve Quizzing is the one hosting, so he'll be the voice on the mic throughout the session. The whole thing is held at The Black Bull, a York pub that's easy enough to find if you know the city, and it's open to anyone who wants to get involved. You don't need to be a walking encyclopaedia to have a go; the speed element means you can still climb the leaderboard even if you're not the most knowledgeable person in the room, as long as you're quick on the draw.
