A guided nature walk led by author and wildlife artist Jonathan Pomroy, exploring the wildlife and landscape of the Ampleforth Valley, followed by refreshments in the abbey orchard.
Ampleforth Abbey is hosting a guided nature walk on Saturday 24 October, running from 9:30am to 11:30am. It's led by Jonathan Pomroy, an author and wildlife artist who'll be pointing out the wildlife and landscape of the estate as you go. The walk takes you through the Ampleforth Valley, so you'll be out in the estate's grounds rather than just around the abbey buildings.
Ampleforth Abbey itself is described as a place of peace and tranquillity and a haven for wildlife, and it's home to the largest Benedictine community of monks in the UK. The walk is timed for late October, when the valley is in the middle of its autumn change, so it's a good chance to see the estate as the seasons shift.
Once the walk is over, everyone gathers in the Ampleforth Abbey Orchard for refreshments. Apple cake is on the menu, along with a glass of apple juice or apple cider. Children are very welcome, though they have to be accompanied by an adult at all times.
