A recurring monthly book group meeting for the LGBTQ+ community to discuss contemporary fiction, classics, and memoirs by queer authors.
The LGBTQ+ Book Group meets at York Theatre Royal on Tuesday 14 July, and it's a recurring thing, not a one-off. The group is run as a safe and welcoming space for people to get together and talk about books that celebrate and explore the LGBTQ+ community. The reading list covers a fair bit of ground: contemporary fiction, queer classics, memoirs, and young adult novels, and everything is written by queer authors. It's as much about the people as the books, too — the whole point is to help people make connections and build relationships within York's LGBTQ+ community.
If you're new to it, there's a bit of a ritual to the night. The group suggests meeting up at the downstairs bar first to grab a drink before heading up to the discussion. It's a good way to settle in and have a chat before the actual book talk gets going. From there, the session moves to the De Grey House Upper Foyer, which is where the group gathers to dive into the month's pick.

It's a monthly thing, so if you miss the July date, there are plenty more to follow: Tuesday 11 August, Tuesday 8 September, Tuesday 13 October, and Tuesday 10 November. You're responsible for getting your own copy of the book, though there are two local ways to do it: you can buy from Portal, the LGBTQ+ bookshop here in York, or borrow from York Library. Participation is free, and the meetings run on Tuesday nights at York Theatre Royal.
