Gala Street Performance

York Castle Museum is bringing the Gala Street Performance to Kirkgate on Tuesday 21 July and Tuesday 28 July, two days of live entertainment built around the spirit of the York Gala. The performances happen right on the museum's recreated Victorian street, so you're watching them in the middle of the scene they're playing to. The programme is made up of Victorian-inspired acts, and the museum describes the whole thing as full of fun, laughter and live performance.

If you've never been inside, it's worth having the rest of the museum in your head while you're there. The museum is an award-winning attraction that lets you step into over 400 years of York's past, and Kirkgate is its most famous part — a recreated Victorian street with authentic shops, costumes and historical collections. The museum buildings themselves were once a Georgian prison, and they still hold a history of felons, thieves and murders, including the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin.

Beyond the street, there's a fair bit more to see. You'll find a Jacobean dining room, the '1914: When the World Changed Forever' exhibition, and 'Secrets of Dress', a fashion gallery that looks at social history. There's also 'The Sixties', which aims to recreate the spirit of that decade. So if you're coming for the Gala performances, you can easily spend the rest of your visit working your way through the different eras.

The Gala Street Performance runs on Tuesday 21 July and Tuesday 28 July, and it's included in general admission, so you don't need a separate ticket for it.
