A winter-themed experience at the JORVIK Viking Centre where the 10th-century Viking ride is transformed into a snow-covered wonderland with festive Yule Lads.
A Winter Misadventure returns to the JORVIK Viking Centre from Monday 9 November 2026, running through to Sunday 23 January 2027. It's the seasonal version of the centre's main ride, which takes you through the sights, sounds and smells of 10th-century Viking-age York.
For this winter run, the journey transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. The 10th-century inhabitants are shown battling the icy chill, and the Yule Lads — the centre's slightly chaotic Norse elves — have taken over, adding festive tricks to bring the Viking past to life. The ride follows the route of the Coppergate site, which gave up some of the most astounding discoveries in modern archaeology.
Beyond the ride, the centre's museum galleries house a collection of thousand-year-old artefacts. You get close to rare finds, from delicate earrings and socks to frying pans, padlocks and even a fossilised piece of Viking poo, and you can handle real artefacts while talking to friendly Viking hosts. Multi-language commentary is available on the ride, so it works if you're visiting with people who don't speak English.
