On Saturday 1 August 2026, York Minster took on a different kind of evening role. At 7:30 pm, Ignite Concerts presented The Music of ABBA, a candlelit tribute concert inside one of York’s best-known buildings. The event brought a familiar pop soundtrack into a setting usually associated with choral music, worship and centuries of history. Doors opened at 6:45 pm, giving ticket holders time to take their seats before the music began.

The concert featured vocalist Maggie Wakeling with live strings. Her set included “Dancing Queen”, “Mamma Mia”, “Waterloo” and “The Winner Takes It All”, so the programme covered some of ABBA’s most recognisable songs while keeping the performance centred on voice and acoustic accompaniment. The candlelight formed part of the concert setting rather than simply serving as decoration, with the Minster’s nave providing the backdrop for the performance.
That contrast is the main point of the evening: a world-famous pop catalogue presented in York’s medieval cathedral. York Minster, formally the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter, was built over several centuries, with the present Gothic building completed and consecrated in 1472. Its wide nave, central tower and surviving medieval stained glass give the space a very different character from a conventional concert hall. The Great East Window, restored over a decade and completed in 2018, is among the building’s most notable features, although the concert itself took place in the nave.
Tickets were priced between £26 and £50, with Nave and Side Aisle options available through the Ignite Concerts box office. There was a short interval, but refreshments were not available during it. Tickets could also be booked by telephone on 07966 959427. As the 1 August performance has now taken place, the official York Minster event page is best used as a record of the concert rather than as a current booking page. Ignite Concerts continues to organise candlelit performances in York and describes its series as a mix of live music and candlelight across different musical styles.
