Romeo + Juliet in Concert at York Barbican

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is coming to the York Barbican, but it is not a screening you can catch this year. The York Barbican has been confirmed as a stop on the Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert tour, with the city's date set for 21 October 2027, as part of a global tour marking the 30th anniversary of the 1996 film. The world premiere took place at the Sydney Opera House on 29 September 2026, and the UK leg runs through mid-October 2027, with Edinburgh on the 17th, Glasgow on the 18th, London on the 20th, Birmingham on the 22nd and Manchester on the 23rd.

The format is the draw here. Rather than a standard screening, a hybrid ensemble of 12 rock and orchestral musicians performs the score live in real time, synchronised to the action on screen. The full film remains intact, original dialogue and action included, with atmospheric lighting and live production added to the room. The whole thing runs to about two hours and twenty minutes, interval included.

For anyone who has not seen it, the 1996 film was Baz Luhrmann's take on Shakespeare, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the lead roles. It is perhaps best remembered for its soundtrack, which leaned hard into the nineties with tracks like Des'ree's Kissing You, The Cardigans' Lovefool, Radiohead's Talk Show Host and Garbage's #1 Crush. That music is what the live ensemble is there to recreate, so it is really a concert as much as a cinema night.

Behind the scenes, the tour is being put together by Communion ONE and GEA Live, in collaboration with Disney Concerts and Baz Luhrmann himself. Communion ONE is the UK live concert promoter formed from the merger of Communion Presents and FKP Scorpio UK, and GEA Live is an Amsterdam-based live entertainment company founded in 2003. Luhrmann, born Mark Anthony Luhrmann in Sydney in 1962, has since gone on to Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge!, Australia, The Great Gatsby and Elvis, while DiCaprio and Danes have both had long careers at the highest level of the industry.

Because the York date is so far off, the ticket information is what to keep an eye on. Presale opens at 10am today, 16 September 2026, with general sale following at 10am on 18 September. It is worth noting that these tickets are for the 2027 show, not anything happening this autumn, so there is plenty of time to plan around it.
