Just inside Monk Bar at 2 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LQ, Monk Bar Model Shop is a family-owned independent shop that has been trading since August 1963. That makes it York’s oldest model shop, and its location is easy to place if you are walking into the city through the medieval gate. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00. It also offers UK mail order, with free UK mainland delivery on orders over £75.

The range is broad rather than limited to one type of modelling. There is stock for model railways in OO, N and L gauges, along with locomotives, track, scenery and accessories from brands including Hornby, Dapol, Peco, Graham Farish, Gaugemaster, Bachmann, Ratio and Metcalfe. The shelves also cover plastic kits, figures, paints and scenic materials, with Airfix, Tamiya and Revell among the familiar names. Other sections include Scalextric, diecast cars, planes and vehicles, and a large selection of jigsaws from Gibsons, Jumbo and Falcon.
Prices vary considerably depending on the subject and scale. Smaller items include Peco Rail Joiners at £4.75, an Airfix Spitfire Mk.Vc Starter Set at £10.99 and a Revell Millennium Falcon Model Set at £19.99. Larger purchases include the Graham Farish Western Rambler Train Set at £169.99, while selected Dapol N-gauge locomotives are listed from £110.25 to £152.50, with some available for pre-order. There are also non-railway building kits, such as the Tamiya F-35B Lightning II at £89.99 and CADA car kits from £15.99.
The shop has also been part of York’s local sporting scene, sponsoring York Knights rugby league for around fifteen years. Director Andy Masheder has described how that support began with sponsorship of individual players before developing into shirt sponsorship. The business closed for nearly three months during the pandemic but has since reopened.
