Haunted York: autumn tours worth booking

York’s ghost walks work particularly well in autumn, when the historic centre is dark earlier and the old streets are quieter after the daytime crowds have gone. Most tours last between 60 and 90 minutes and pass through familiar places such as the Shambles, Stonegate, York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and the city’s narrow snickelways. The stories mix local history with reported hauntings, so these are walking tours with plenty of context rather than simple jump scares.

A long-running option is The Original Ghost Walk of York, established in 1973 and widely described as the world’s first exclusive ghost walk. It leaves every night at 8pm from the King’s Arms at Ouse Bridge, unless flooding means the meeting point has to move onto the bridge itself. The walk takes roughly 75 to 90 minutes, costs £10 for adults and £6 for children and students, and goes ahead in all weather. Guides are City, County or Equity qualified. For a darker historical angle, The Bloody Tour of York starts at St William’s College on College Street at either 6pm or 6.30pm. Alicia “Mad Alice” Stabler leads the 90-minute route through side streets and snickleways, covering invasions, executions and other grim episodes. Adult tickets cost £10–£12, and the separate Bloody Execution Tour runs on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

Shadows of York Ghost Walk meets outside the Guy Fawkes Inn on High Petergate at 6.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. From 23 to 30 October, the walk is scheduled at 6.30pm and 8.30pm each evening, with three departures on Halloween at 5pm, 6.30pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are £13 for adults and £8 for children under 16. It is rated PG, although the stories include sad and gory historical details, and the organisers do not recommend it for children under eight or anyone with a nervous disposition. The walk is wheelchair accessible, and infants can travel in prams.

If you would rather spend less time on cobbles, the York Ghost Bus Tour, or Necrobus, lasts 75 minutes and uses an old Routemaster with live actors and projections. There is a short walk around the Shambles halfway through, while the driver provides the commentary. Departures are at 7.30pm each night from March to December, apart from Mondays and major holidays, with extra 6pm and 9pm services generally added during school holidays. The bus leaves from stop RE outside York station, on the south side of The Principal York, and prices start at £18 per adult. It cannot take prams or wheelchairs, and the content is not suitable for children under five.

For autumn planning, book ahead for weekends, school holidays and especially 31 October, when popular departures can sell out several days in advance. Check the exact time and meeting point when booking, as seasonal schedules vary between operators. Most walks are outdoors, so warm layers and comfortable shoes are sensible on York’s uneven, cobbled lanes. The city’s best-known haunted locations include the Golden Fleece, the Treasurer’s House cellar, York Minster and Clifford’s Tower, while Mad Alice Lane adds one of the more unusual names to the route.
