Day Fever brings daytime clubbing to York

If your nights out these days tend to wind down around 9pm, there is a whole clubbing trend that has been quietly growing up in the UK, and it has finally landed in York. It is called Day Fever, and the whole idea is simple: a proper dance party that starts in the afternoon and finishes in time for dinner. The concept was dreamed up back in 2024 by actress Vicky McClure, her husband Jonny Owen and Jon McClure, the frontman of Reverend and The Makers. What started as a bit of an experiment has turned into something far bigger than anyone expected, with the organisers now describing it as the UK and Ireland's biggest daytime party. It is approaching its third anniversary this December, and since it first got going, more than 85,000 people have had a go at it.

In York, there are two dates to know about. The first is today, Friday 21 August, over at York Museum Gardens, and the second falls on Saturday 10 October at the York Barbican. The music is built around the 70s, 80s and 90s, so it leans heavily on the kind of tracks that most people over 30 know by heart. The hours are the real selling point, though: doors open at 3pm and everything wraps up by 8pm, which means you can have a full afternoon on the dancefloor and still be home for dinner. It is pitched squarely at people who love to dance but have no desire to stay out until the early hours.

Part of the appeal is how unpretentious the whole thing is. There is no dress code at all, and the organisers go out of their way to describe it as a safe, inclusive and ego-free space, welcoming everyone from people in glittery heels to anyone who would rather turn up in comfy trainers. It is less about being seen and more about actually dancing, which is a refreshing angle on a nightlife scene that can sometimes feel a bit too focused on the image.

The October date takes place at the York Barbican, which is worth a bit of context if you have never been. It sits at the southern end of the city centre, right opposite the city walls, and it is the largest music and arts venue in York, holding 1,500 people seated or 1,900 standing. The council owns the building, and it is run by ASM Global with management by Legends Global Services Ltd, so it is a proper, well-equipped room rather than a makeshift space. Between the two dates, you get a choice of an outdoor summer afternoon in the gardens or a bigger indoor night in the autumn.
