Concert by the USF Jazztet, a big band, and the USF Latin Jazztet, a Latin jazz ensemble, at the USF campus concert hall.
The USF Jazztet and USF Latin Jazztet share the stage at the Peter and Cynthia Zinober Concert Hall on Tuesday, November 10, for a program of small group jazz. It's a double bill from the university's jazz program, with two different ensembles playing the same night.
The USF Jazztet is directed by LaRue Nickelson. It's a big band that gives student performers the chance to play alongside experienced musicians, so you'll hear a mix of students and pros on the same stage. The USF Latin Jazztet is directed by Mauricio Rodriguez and focuses on the musical traditions and influences of Latin America, bringing a different rhythmic and melodic approach to the evening.
Between the two, the concert covers a fair bit of ground. You get the big band sound of the Jazztet and the Latin-influenced work of the Latin Jazztet, both in a single night. The whole thing is billed as a program of small group jazz, so expect the focus to be on the playing rather than a massive production.
