Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical The Sound of Music, directed by Jack O'Brien, with eight performances at Carol Morsani Hall.
The Sound of Music comes to Carol Morsani Hall - The Straz Center from March 9 to 14, 2027, with eight performances scheduled over the week. It's the last show written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the score holds the songs most people know by heart: 'My Favourite Things', 'Edelweiss', and 'Do-Re-Mi'. It premiered in 1959 at The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and took home five Tonys, and it's a story that draws from the memoir of Maria, the real Austrian governess whose 1956 film Die Trapp-Familie inspired the show. The plot follows the Von Trapp family's escape from Nazi-occupied Austria.
Three-time Tony winner Jack O'Brien, who also directed Hairspray, is at the helm of this production. He's stripped away some of the kitsch that's attached itself to the musical over the years, and he's set the record straight on one small detail: 'Edelweiss' was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, not a traditional Austrian folk song as is often assumed. The cast features Cayleigh Capaldi as Maria Rainer, Kevin Earley as Captain Georg von Trapp, Christiane Noll as Mother Abbess, Nicholas Rodriguez as Max Detweiler, Kate Loprest as Elsa Schraeder, Ariana Ferch as Liesl von Trapp, Ian Coursey as Rolf Gruber, and Lisa Howard as Mother Abbess starting September 18.
