Screening of 'The Mummy' (1999) at the Historic Duncan Auditorium of Tampa Theatre, part of the 'A Nightmare on Franklin Street' series.
The Mummy (1999) is playing at the Historic Duncan Auditorium on Sunday, October 25, as part of the Tampa Theatre's 2026 A Nightmare on Franklin Street series, presented by Bank of America. It's a 2 hour and 4 minute runtime, rated PG-13.
If you've seen it a dozen times on DVD, it's a different thing on a big screen. The story follows Rick O'Connell, played by Brendan Fraser, a legionnaire who stumbles upon the hidden ruins of Hamunaptra in 1920s Egypt. In the process, he awakens the cursed High Priest Imhotep, played by Julian Sands, whose revenge is pursued by Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan. It's a high-adventure romp that works as much for the action as it does for the chemistry between the leads.
There's a bit of history behind this version, too. For years, there were failed attempts to update the 1932 Boris Karloff Mummy, and writer-director Stephen Sommers eventually landed on this take by leaning into Indiana Jones and the adventure films of the 1960s and '70s. He wasn't the only one with an idea—Clive Barker and Joe Dante had both pitched their own versions before this one finally made it to the screen.
