A three-hour pop-up cinema party with curated short films, vintage animation and music projected on 16mm film at The Paper Seahorse.
The Glow of Real Film brings 16mm projection to The Paper Seahorse on Friday, October 23, from 6 PM to 9 PM. It's a three-hour pop-up cinema party rather than a straight screening, and the whole thing is built around real film running through a projector in an intimate room. The whir of the machine becomes part of the show, and the image has a grain and glow that digital screens just can't quite capture.
The night opens with a curated selection of short films, vintage animation and music. After that, the feature film takes over, though it's broken up by intermissions to mingle, with time to gather again after the credits roll. The structure is meant to be social—you're not just sitting in the dark for three hours straight, so there's room to stretch your legs and talk between the reels.

If you've spent most of your movie-watching on a phone or a flat-screen, this is a good chance to see what actual film looks like on a wall. The 16mm format is a physical thing—the light passing through a strip of celluloid—and that's exactly what the night is about. The Paper Seahorse is at 213 South Howard Avenue in Tampa, and tickets are $20.
