Free screening of the documentary 'The Fish Don't Care When It Rains' followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker Jennifer Msumba.
The Fish Don't Care When It Rains is coming to the Ferman Center for the Arts on Tuesday, November 3, for a special screening and a live Q&A. The film is a feature documentary about Jennifer Msumba, an autistic musician, artist, and filmmaker from the Tampa Bay area, and the night is built around her: first the movie, then Msumba herself joining the audience to answer questions.
The film is told from her own perspective and follows her through a few heavy chapters. It looks at creativity, disability, institutionalization, resilience, and independence, tracing her journey from navigating the mental health system and years in residential treatment facilities to finding her voice through music, art, and storytelling. It's a local story told by the person who lived it.
It's had a bit of a run already. It had its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival and began an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run in Dallas in October 2026, and the trailer has connected with millions of viewers online. This screening is presented by the Sunscreen Film Festival in partnership with the University of Tampa's Film, Animation and New Media program.
