Chamber music recital by violinist Livia Sohn and pianist Bernadene Blaha, with Respighi, Ravel, Hungarian rhapsodies and Shostakovich's Violin Sonata.
Livia Sohn and Bernadene Blaha are coming to USF Barness Recital Hall on Sunday, October 25, as part of the Rutenberg Chamber Music Series. Sohn is a violinist and Blaha is a pianist, and they've been recital and chamber music partners for a long time. This is a duo performance, so it's just the two of them on stage.
The program they've put together covers a wide range of color, drama, and emotion. It opens with the warm lyricism of Respighi and moves into the fiery showmanship of Ravel, mixing Hungarian rhapsodies with French impressionist flair. The set closes with Shostakovich's Violin Sonata, which they describe as stark, searing, and raw. Between the Respighi, the Ravel, and the Shostakovich, the program traces a striking emotional arc for violin and piano.
If you're not familiar with those names, the arc is pretty easy to follow: you start with the melodic, singing lines of Respighi, move through the flashy, rhythmic energy of Ravel, and end with the heavy, stripped-down intensity of Shostakovich. It's a program that moves from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other in a single afternoon.
