Free academic talk by Dr. Susan Greenbaum, author of 'More Than Black', on the Afro-Cuban history and culture of Tampa.
Dr. Susan Greenbaum is coming to the FAO Building on Wednesday, October 21, for a conversation about Afro-Cuban history in Tampa. The session runs from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in Room 296 of the Faculty Office Building at USF, and it's part of The BEAT of Tampa Bay's Black Engaging Academic Talks, brought to campus in partnership with the Institute of Black Life.
Greenbaum is a former USF anthropology professor and the author of More Than Black: Afro-Cubans of Tampa. The book draws on interviews and research with community members to trace the city's Afro-Cuban history and culture, and that's what the conversation will center on. One of the specific threads she follows is the historic MartĂ-Maceo Society, a community organization that played a role in the lives of Afro-Cubans here. If you've ever wondered about the roots of the Afro-Cuban presence in the city, this is a good place to start.
