Scout merit badge workshop to build and launch chemical rockets and design a space station, with a planetarium show and guided star tour.
MOSI is hosting a Space Exploration Merit Badge Workshop on Sunday, November 29, from 10 AM to 3:30 PM. It's a full-day session designed for scouts working toward their Space Exploration merit badge, and it puts them in the driver's seat rather than just listening to a lecture.
The morning is all about the hands-on stuff. Scouts build and launch chemical rockets, so they'll be working with their hands and seeing the results in real time. From there, the focus shifts to the design side, where they'll sketch out a space station. It's a good mix of the two halves of the badge: the physics of getting something off the ground and the engineering of keeping something up there.
Once the building is done, the day moves into the museum's other assets. There's a planetarium show and a guided star tour, so the kids get to look up and see the actual stars they've been talking about all morning. It turns the whole thing from a classroom exercise into a day at the museum.
