A four-hour workshop led by BSA-certified counselors where participants learn game design and create new games with hands-on activities.
MOSI is hosting a Game Design Merit Badge Workshop on Sunday, December 13, from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's a four-hour session that takes scouts through the basics of game design and gives them the chance to build their own games from the ground up. The whole thing is designed to be hands-on, so it's more about doing than just listening.
Each scout walks away with a few things: a digital workbook to keep track of what they've learned and a blank Blue Card to record their progress toward the merit badge. The workshop is led by counselors who are registered with the Boy Scouts of America, trained by the museum, and BSA-certified, and who've completed BSA Youth Protection training. They all come from STEM backgrounds and have a passion for teaching, so they're well-equipped to handle a room full of curious kids.
There are a couple of logistics to keep in mind before you sign up. Scouts under 13 need a registered adult chaperone, and there has to be at least one adult for every ten scouts in the workshop. The cost is $28 per scout, and that includes admission to MOSI after the program, so you can spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the museum's exhibits once the workshop wraps up.
