Interactive NeuroArts concert led by Sasha Gusikhin that blends Golden Age musical theatre, jazz and classical repertoire with free improvisation and audience participation.
Sasha Gusikhin brings Golden Age on the Edge! to the Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 24, at 12 PM. It's part of the Kaleidoscope Series, and it's not your usual sit-and-listen concert. Gusikhin describes it as an interactive NeuroArts experience—an intergenerational, participatory performance that looks at the connection between music, the brain, health, and human connection.
The music itself pulls from a few different worlds: Golden Age musical theatre, jazz, and classical repertoire, all mixed in with free improvisation. The "interactive" part comes when the audience gets involved. There are sing-alongs, collective breathing, storytelling, and spontaneous music-making, and it's open to all ages, so you can bring the kids or your parents along. Words, stories, and ideas from the crowd can even become the spark for music created together in real time.
Running through the performance are insights from neuroscience and NeuroArts, explaining how the brain responds to music and creative participation. So while you're singing along or making music, you'll hear about what's happening in your head as you do it. It's a mix of a concert and a live demonstration of how we react to sound.
