Screening of the 1961 British horror and sci-fi film 'Gorgo' in the Taylor Screening Room of the Tampa Theatre, part of the 'A Nightmare on Franklin Street' series.
Tampa Theatre is bringing Gorgo back to the big screen on Friday, October 23, in the Taylor Screening Room. It's a British horror and sci-fi film from 1961, produced by King Brothers Productions—a company that made its name by shooting cheaply and doing business aggressively. They filmed on London streets on Sunday afternoons, where it cost half as much as Hollywood, and called it a day. Billed as a Godzilla knockoff, the story is actually closer to King Kong: a giant prehistoric lizard is awakened from beneath the ocean by a volcanic eruption and captured for exhibition. The theatre hasn't shown Gorgo since its first run at the venue.
The screening is part of the 14th annual 'A Nightmare on Franklin Street,' two weeks of horror programming at the newly restored movie palace. The theatre reopened just in time for its centenary and Halloween festivities, and it's known as one of the most haunted buildings in town. Gorgo is one of the titles in that lineup.
