Gallery talk by Executive Curator Robin O'Dell about the exhibition '25 Years of FMoPA' at Historic Ybor, with pre-registration required.
Robin O'Dell, the City of Tampa's Executive Curator, leads a gallery talk at Historic Ybor on Sunday, November 1, from 1 PM to 2 PM. He'll be talking through the exhibition 25 Years of FMoPA, walking through how it came together and what it means for the Florida Museum of Art. If you've seen the show, it's a chance to hear the story behind the curation; if you haven't, it's a good way to get your bearings before you dive in.
The talk takes place in Historic Ybor, also known as Florida's Latin Quarter. It's Tampa's National Historic Landmark District, named for cigar factory owner Vicente M. Ybor, who moved his factory from Key West to what is now Ybor City in 1886. By the end of the 19th century, the area and Tampa were the world's largest producers of hand-rolled cigars, and the neighborhood became home to waves of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who worked the factories. Today it's still a shopping, dining, and entertainment district where the art of the premium hand-rolled cigar lives on and the nightlife is as colorful as the Spanish flamenco dancers. The talk is held at 1630 East 7th Avenue, right in the heart of it.
