Free open mic for poets, musicians, writers and performers, plus a public comment training session run by the Save Ybor City coalition.
The Shuffle hosts the F*ck Live Nation! Artist Open Mic & Public Comment Training on Sunday, October 25, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. It's put on by Save Ybor City, the coalition opposing a proposed Live Nation venue in Ybor City. The whole afternoon is split into three one-hour blocks, so you can drop in for one part or hang out for all three.
The first hour is an open mic for poets, musicians, writers and performers to share work on any topic. The second is an educational hour that lays out the Live Nation situation and the advocacy the coalition has taken so far. The final hour is the training: they'll explain what the Barrio Latino Commission does, how public comment works and how to write a clear two-to-three-minute comment. There's time to practice and get feedback before the commission meets at Old City Hall on Tuesday, October 27, to hear the applications related to the proposed venue.
Save Ybor City frames the neighborhood's independent venues, artists, musicians and small businesses as central to its character, and this afternoon is built around that. The open mic gives local creators a place to perform, and the training gives them a way to speak directly to the commission. If you've been following the debate over the venue, this is a chance to get up to speed and figure out how to make your voice part of the record.
